Dr Lauren Lai King

Dr Lauren Lai King is a specialist emergency medicine physician and senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She is AFEM’s Chief Operations Officer. Her experience in both urban and rural centres across South Africa has been pivotal in fostering her commitment to further develop emergency medicine training in South Africa. She is grateful for the opportunity to be of service within AFEM and expand her activities into Africa. Her vision is to advocate, build and support equitable, accessible, and sustainable emergency care systems throughout the African region.

 

Professor Heike Geduld

Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa

Prof Heike Geduld is an Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town. She is the immediate past-President of the College of Emergency Medicine of South Africa and a founding member and Past President of the African Federation for Emergency Medicine (AFEM). Heike has a passion for education and has taught in Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Uganda, Kenya, Madagascar, and Egypt amongst others. Heike has consulted on emergency care systems and injury care for the World Health Organization and was one of the authors of the WHO/ICRC Basic Emergency Care Course. In 2016, she received the South African Medical Association (SAMA) Gender and Humanitarian award. In 2018, Heike was awarded the Fellowship of the Order of IFEM (The International Federation for Emergency Medicine) for her work in developing Emergency Medicine in Africa.

 

Dr Robert Holliman

Dr Holliman is a specialist emergency registrar undertaking a clinical fellowship with AFEM to assist with project management and operational coordination. He is currently working on a research thesis in Emergency Medicine (UCT, SA). After originally training in the UK, he has worked both in rural and urban public emergency departments across South Africa as well as spending time at various healthcare centres in countries across Africa. Dr Holliman is an advocate for the improvement of global emergency care standards and universal access to emergency healthcare.

 

Dr Emma Gold

MA, DTM&H, MBChB, MRCEM(UK)

Dr Gold is a specialist emergency registrar undertaking a clinical fellowship with AFEM to assist with project management and operational coordination. She is currently undertaking an MSc MED in Emergency Medicine (UCT, SA) and the Diploma in the Medical Care of Catastrophes (Worshipful Society of Apothecaries). Dr Gold is a UK-trained clinician who has completed post-graduate studies in Tanzania and Uganda and has experience working in urban public South African emergency departments. Her special interests are Healthcare Ethics and Medical Education. She is committed to supporting emergency care system strengthening across the African region.

 

Dr. Hannah Ofosua Owusu

Dr Hannah Ofosua Owusu is a staff of St. Joseph Hospital in Koforidua - Ghana. She is currently doing her residency in Emergency Medicine with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi - Ghana.
Dr Owusu is serving as an intern with the African Federation for Emergency medicine. She has the vision to help solve emergency care challenges in Africa and the world through education, research and advocacy.
